Hawaiian Islands

The State of Hawaii includes six major islands: Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Inter-island travel is usually by commercial airline service. The island of Oahu, where the City of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach are located, has the largest population. Kona Beth Shalom is on the Big Island of Hawaii, the southernmost island in the chain.

The Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii Island (called "The Big Island," "Orchid Island," or "Volcano Island") has the largest land area, over 4,000 square miles, which is somewhat larger than Connecticut. "Kona," where congregation Kona Beth Shalom is located, refers to the districts on the western, or leeward, coast of Hawaii Island. The main town on the Kona coast is Kailua-Kona. The city of Hilo is on the eastern coast of Hawaii Island.

Kailua-Kona

Kailua-Kona town is located on the ocean side ("makai" in Hawaiian) of the intersection of Palani Road and the Queen Ka`ahumani Highway (routes 19 and 11). Ali`i Drive runs through the old town and continues south along the ocean, ending at Keauhou Bay. Not far from its southern end is Kahalu'u Beach Park, also known as "The Snorkeling Beach" because of its excellent snorkeling. Adjacent to this Beach Park, at its south end, is the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. Besides driving south on Alii Drive from town, one could take highway 11 south, turning right on King Kamehameha III Road, then a right on Ali`i Drive.

Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort

Our Sabbath and Holiday Services are held at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on the ocean (makai) side of Ali`i Drive in Keauhou. The resort is adjacent to Kahalu`u Beach Park, about one half mile north of King Kamahameha III Road. Shabbat services are held on fourth Friday of each month and the Saturday that follows. Friday night services begin at sundown, and Saturday morning services begin at 10:00 am.

Thank you in advance. I would like to see you in the near future.

All the best,

Shari
